Marte Meo in the FAIRbund

With "Marte Meo", the FAIRbund has another method of supporting families and also offers further training in this area for external participants.

Marte Meo is a method for development support that can be learned in further training and is a form of advice. You can find information on training here here.

Below you will find out more about Marte Meo, a video-supported parental advice method that can be provided as part of social-pedagogical family support (§ 31 SGB VIII).

The method was developed in the 80s by Maria Aarts from the Netherlands. "Marte Meo" means "achieve something with your own strength" and refers to the possibility of becoming aware of your own potential and resources through the power of the pictures, to use them more purposefully and to develop them further.

The aim of Marte Meo is to (re)activate and expand the natural development-supporting dialogue between accompanying adult and child, e.g. to support language development, socio-emotional development, emotional regulation, cooperative behavior, play and school skills, self-image and self-esteem development.

On the one hand, Marte Meo accompanies parents who:

  • Due to different circumstances (e.g. problematic biographies/bonding experiences, mental illnesses, separation from the child) insufficient parenting skills could develop as well as those who
  • need special educational skills because they have children with special needs (e.g. parents of children with physical and/or mental disabilities; parents in foster care and educational institutions).

As part of the help, everyday interactions between the adult caregiver and the child are filmed. The Marte Meo specialist analyzes the video recording with regard to existing resources and development steps that have not yet been completed on the part of the child and the adult caregiver. In the consultation (the so-called review), the information is conveyed using short video clips and pictures.

Marte Meo is provided by two specialists with many years of experience in this area, as well as in outpatient and inpatient education.
